Is China the next world superpower? The argument presented in this paper is the status of China as a world superpower. There are many different views in answer to this question. Research included articles by newspapers, magazines, writers, researcher groups, medical institutions and political figures. Many articles imply China’s attributes give credibility to consideration as a powerful nation. An editorial by Investors Business Daily states that because of China’s high military spending an â€Å"unnamed† leading think tank feels they will achieve military parity in less than 25 years. (China, the next superpower? 2011) Unfortunately, military spending is the only basis given for attaining parity. Military parity does not qualify China as a†¦show more content†¦(Minxin Pei 2006) Peoples Daily Online presented comments from Henry Kissinger on why China will not be the next superpower. Kissinger stated that â€Å"China needs to keep its political institutions in line with its economic development. It will not have time to concentrate on dominating the world because it will be too busy with this fundamental change.† (China will not be the next Superpower 2011) To determine if China will be considered the next world superpower, a person must know what a superpower is. An unambiguous definition of a world superpower is unclear. For the purpose of this paper, the definition and elements as presented by Alice Lyman Miller will be used. According to Alice Lyman Miller, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and an associate professor in National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, â€Å"a superpower is a country that has the capacity to project dominating power and influence anywhere in the world, and sometimes, in more than one region of the globe at a time. There are four components of influence: military, economic, political, and cultural.† (Alice L. Miller 2005) There are several reasons to believe China can rival the United States as a superpower. One important aspect to consider is country population. Much data is based upon the number of people in a country.
